yes it would have been much easier if I had entered correctly

what would be a better way to display tricks as played?

I've edited the rounds a little that might make play easier. Lead in bold:

USE THIS SEQUENCE OF PLAYS

North
!S AK
!H T954
!D A864
!C AT3

South
!S QJT87632
!H A
!D Q
!C K74             Plan you play in CL's 6S.

1.  !C 9 AC 2C 4C
2.  !H 4 QH AH 6H

3.  !S 2 4S AS 5S
4.  !H 5 7H QS 8H
5.  !S 3 9S KS 2D
6.  !H KH 6S 7H                ... having some trouble in getting edits to stick because my typing is a mess.
7.  !S J 2D 4D 8C
8.  !S T 5C 6D 3D
9.  !S 8 5D 3C TD

Interesting Play Hands / Re: Love "all indications E has Heart guard"

Good thinking. I over-looked that no declarer would play his QH in that manner with out a supporting honour.

And unfortunately I mucked up the recording play of cards, so this happens at the table. Note north opened 1C or 1D and no overcall from East.

Thanks John. Corrected R5 so that AS is KS. Yes hand is a squeeze. In my two small local f2f clubs virtually no-one plays count signals and many not even attitude,  :o . The 10H, 8D act as threats as does the 7C in Souths hand. In the end opponents can't hold their individual suit stop and also 2 clubs on the final run of trumps.

nice, thanks Oliver. In Loves bidding, North was dealer and opened 1C and thats why I wrongly ruled out East having H KQxx or KQxxx. Perhaps 1NT in his time was 16-18.

North Dealer. Bid this with OCP?

Love sets S in 6S with 9C lead. All non-vl. No opposition bidding.

Edited: East plays in newer lower post with her actual holdings ( she is just !H KQx).
Also where East holds say !H Qxx. What now?

My query is what clues suggest East has heart guard?  Redundant unless East has KQ(x?) but not likely !H KQxxx(N?)

Why can't East have extra D and West the KH?

Yes, East has the KQ but not the KQxxx you hoped for. Will any other play assist?

Cheers Ash

BTW. Good planing with first trick won in dummy (else South has no threats) allows  West or East to hold KH, but you need an indication as to which hand holds it.* If East holds then we may need to play for a double rather than simple squeeze, and this appears(?) to be a hand where one can not combine both types.    ... some poor thinking on my behalf, no East with go up with unsupported QH.

* Would it be because a solid West would throw the KH if he also had JH? A look at EW card (basic St. Am.) suggest they are OK but unlikely to make this deceptive but ordinary play.

Thanks Oliver and John. I have a few books but don't believe they help as much as learning time at a table, with a mentor or help from interactive software.

Software. I would recommend BM2000. I've had it for a few years, return to it every now and again and still haven't mastered all its hands. A nice feature (one that an old partner just hates and won't use it for that reason) is that if you make a poor play, or not the optimal one, it will move around defensive holdings to injure you. You might think, "OK, I'll finesse in D's this time on second try (as it was in the East hand) only to find its now with West." Still down :) The program isn't faulty but your plan. It has a help movie for each problem and a fine range of levels from ordinary to expert.

As for books, two I'd recommend from Mike Lawrence, on card combinations and how to read your opponents cards. Not too hard but very instructive.

Secondly like Oliver other experts run tutorials on bbo too. e.g. Hondo77, Howard. Yes a problem is that it only fits some time zones but there are others. He gives great advice, has instructive hands (only 6 every session so you don't fall off your perch) and its the pressure of real bidding and play. Its free and he is often asking for people to sit. His site, also in aabridge has help and movies for all sets so you can return to play them yourself or to see what others did.

Generally I've found in our group, too many want to just play and spend little or no time at the table discussing play and defence. And many get very defensive if one asks to talk over plays etc. Just playing for fun is fine but if one is serious enough about the game to use OCP then improving card play has to match it.

OK what can the family do about it?

IN PROGRESS ...

This set has been taken from Olivers EXAMPLE hands on this site.

You didn't know it existed? A pity as its a big source of commented hands. This selection I hope will get you interested. EXAMPLES AREA: http://ocp.pigpen.org.uk/Hands.php

North and South hands are attached. Scroll down to them. Also a link to each hand is included. Use it to check a bid if you are stuck or have finished. Please tell us your sequence or any issues you have with the bidding.

Bidding Challenges / Repeated notice.
« on: March 21, 2017, 10:58:13 AM »
So far none of the hands results, I mean bidding sequences, are OCP. You can see how other systems handle these difficult hands but the scores given for likely contracts should be reasonably OK.

Hopefully bidding sequences from other ocp'ers and answers to any questions will help us all.

Finally no system can bid all hands to the best scoring contract. For some, the hands maybe almost impossible to describe at all or in time. Here you could consider why you missed a reasonable score or be happy with your systems par on those hands. Also I'm not sure how MP / Teams scoring influences the balance. Feel free to challenge any score but back that up with your thinking. Its not helpful to just say you disagree with a particular score, and leave it at that. :)
