Interesting Play Hands / Recommended play?
« on: August 05, 2017, 08:22:36 AM »
This hand is from the intermediate level in Bridge Master. South is in 6S with the JH lead. No indication if its MP or IMP scoring. Nil vul. No bidding from EW. East overtakes with AH and leads KD.

North:
S  432
H  43
D  5432
C  654

South:
S  AKQJT
H  KQ
D  A
C  AKQ32

What is your plan?

I go down because I don't see anything better than drawing trumps and hoping for an even break in clubs.

The recommended line is to play 2 rounds of clubs before drawing the last trump. At first I thought, why risk a club ruff by not drawing trumps? What a nice play when I rethink about it.

Now I have to think why my brain didn't allow me to consider the play. The contract is always safe if both follow to two clubs. If one opponent is out on second club, then the only hope is that they don't have the outstanding trump. I was aware of a possible uneven club break but my thinking put the trump in the shorter hand when it need not be, and could not be if the hand is to be made. Nice.

What was your plan?

North Dealer. Bid this with OCP?

Love sets S in 6S with 9C lead. All non-vl. No opposition bidding.

!C AT3

South
!S QJT87632
!H A
!D Q
!C K74             Plan you play in CL's 6S.

Edited: East plays in newer lower post with her actual holdings ( she is just !H KQx).
Also where East holds say !H Qxx. What now?

My query is what clues suggest East has heart guard?  Redundant unless East has KQ(x?) but not likely !H KQxxx(N?)

Why can't East have extra D and West the KH?

Yes, East has the KQ but not the KQxxx you hoped for. Will any other play assist?

Cheers Ash

BTW. Good planing with first trick won in dummy (else South has no threats) allows  West or East to hold KH, but you need an indication as to which hand holds it.* If East holds then we may need to play for a double rather than simple squeeze, and this appears(?) to be a hand where one can not combine both types.    ... some poor thinking on my behalf, no East with go up with unsupported QH.

* Would it be because a solid West would throw the KH if he also had JH? A look at EW card (basic St. Am.) suggest they are OK but unlikely to make this deceptive but ordinary play.

Bidding Challenges / Repeated notice.
« on: March 21, 2017, 10:58:13 AM »
So far none of the hands results, I mean bidding sequences, are OCP. You can see how other systems handle these difficult hands but the scores given for likely contracts should be reasonably OK.

Hopefully bidding sequences from other ocp'ers and answers to any questions will help us all.

Finally no system can bid all hands to the best scoring contract. For some, the hands maybe almost impossible to describe at all or in time. Here you could consider why you missed a reasonable score or be happy with your systems par on those hands. Also I'm not sure how MP / Teams scoring influences the balance. Feel free to challenge any score but back that up with your thinking. Its not helpful to just say you disagree with a particular score, and leave it at that. :)
