Lots of Trumps

(1/1)

Jimmy:
Had this hand today.  We ended up in 6 !H down 1. Other pairs ended up in 5 !H making.  >:(  Take a look.  How would OCP handle this deal.

South Deals,  Love All,  Our bidding started with South bidding 1 !H. (Or,  it could have been a 2 !H opening, would have had the same result because we are aggressive bidders when it comes to slams.).

Hi Jimmy,

OCP practitioners will tend to use Gamma - a trump asking bid - with these hands. Whether the auction is
1 !H-1NT-2 !C-2 !D[Gamma]
OR
2 !H[weak 2]-3 !C[Gamma]

In either case, Gamma will allow partnership to discover they are missing BOTH the Ace and Queen of trumps.

Continuation of the asking bid sequences will show the other suits are tied up tight. Gamma will also show Opener has 6-cards in hearts so even though we are missing the AQ of trumps they are the ONLY two trump cards missing. If West has the AQ or they are split 1-1, 6 !H comes home. So many will still bid 6 !H with that knowledge in hand and knowing the outside suits are all stitched up. So do not feel bad Jimmy. The odds were for you making it.

Note our 1M-1NT is quite different from the "normal 1NT Forcing." The big difference is it incorporates Gamma into it. That is why most OCP Responder's will bid 1 !H-1NT instead of 1 !H-1 !S with Responder's hand.

What John said. It's impossible to get to the best contract on 100% of the hands - you'd be accused of having a wire if you did. Be happy that you're in a slam that's slightly better than a 75% chance. You're going to beat the pairs who stay in 5 !H on these hands by a LARGE margin over time.
