Complex Three Diamonds

The Complex 3 is a Multi-style Opening that shows one of the following hand-types and is unconditionally forcing for 1 round:- The unspecified pre-empts free up the 3 and 3 Openings and provides 4-level Minor suit pre-empts (which are not available in the Simple System). The 30-31 hcp balanced hand-type was thrown in because it actually came up for Jason and me in Tournament play and caught us out, to some extent, and it costs nothing to have it available as a 3rd option.

Responses and Continuations

The style of initial responses is very similar to that used over the Multi 2 opening, with Responder initially bidding the cheapest suit they are not prepared to support at a higher level (ie: Oliver's Twist). Thus:
3 -3 shows any hand that wishes to play in 3 opposite a 3-level Heart pre-empt. Responder may have game interest opposite a pre-empt in a different suit.
-3 shows any hand that wishes to play in 3 opposite a 3-level Spade pre-empt. Responder will have game interest opposite a Heart pre-empt and may have game interest opposite a pre-empt in a Minor.
-4 shows a hand that wishes to play in 4 opposite a 4-level pre-empt in Clubs. Responder will have game interest opposite a pre-empt in either Major and may have game interest opposite a pre-empt in Diamonds.
-4 shows a hand that wishes to play in 4 opposite a 4-level pre-empt in Diamonds. Responder will have game interest opposite a pre-empt in either Major or Clubs, but has no interest in playing in No Trumps.
This series is open-ended in theory. So 3-4, for example, would show a hand wanting to play in game opposite a Spade Pre-empt (or a Minor suit pre-empt), but definitely with slam ambitions opposite a Heart Pre-empt (and possibly opposite a Minor Suit pre-empt too).
30-31 Balanced: A minimum rebid in No Trumps over any of the above responses shows the strong balanced hand. Continuations are as over any NT Rebid that shows a balanced hand (Stayman, 4-suit transfers etc)
-3NT is a special response showing a strong balanced hand that wishes to play in 3NT opposite a Minor-suit pre-empt, but in game or possibly a slam opposite a Major suit Pre-empt.
-Pass Shows the Minor suit pre-empt
